V.Nice!
Thanks Storm. Best, Dan
Nice video, I was in Vietnam in early March and Nah Trang was nice …. DaNang was very good also, excellent beach and clean city ….is 67 years old too old to move ?
It’s too old to become fluent in the Vietnamese language… Tough to learn even the basics!
67 is not too old. You are the typical age of a retiring expat Paul. Make sure to watch this video so you can avoid some of the mistakes I made. https://youtu.be/kpEkv5kIWf8
You’ll be fine. In some ways, you will be better. All the simultaneous change will challenge your brain and connect some new neurons. Plus, when you fall in love … you will feel years younger. Just go at your own pace. Don’t do anything you are not comfortable with and keep your common sense. And talk to your doctor first if you have health challenges. Best, Dan
@Mr C depends on your physical and mental health.
@Herbert Walker well, actually, sometimes it is.
Paul, one should consider the quality of the medical system where one’s going – especially if you have chronic underlying health challenges. If you’re American and have a Medicare Advantage Plan, check to see if they offer some kind of travel health coverage – especially transportation back to U.S. in the event of an emergency!
Some Place For Everyone’s Taste !!!
Yes Master G. I added my usual cultural explorer, Active adventurer, and rural self reliance lists at the end of the video. Best, Dan
Great video Dan but if this list be based on your taste how on Earth did get on the list Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur if you claim to prefer smaller towns? ๐
I don’t claim to like smaller towns exclusively. I am a cultural explorer Von. I also like nature so I am a mixed bag. Thanks for commenting, Dan ๐
Great video. Love you both. Have a sparkling day. ๐
Thank you Bill! Stay safe ! Best, Qiang
Thanks Bill. I told Qiang too. That was my first sparkling day ever. Best, Dan
I like to see more paradise locations like Dalat if possible. I am from Alaska and prefer living in a place that does not require AC or Heating- an eternal spring like climate.
Vagabond Awake You are definitely a travel professional, Dan. What is your impression of Lake Attilan in Guatemala?
Pai Thailand, Medellin Colombia, Arequipa or Cusco Peru, Quito or Cuenca Ecuador, San Cristobal or Oaxaca Mexico, … Thanks for commenting Mark. Best, Dan
Dan Another Great Video. I play your videos in the background as I’m working at home. Keeps Me Motivated!!! Thanks
Thanks Dave. All those views help us in the rankings for sure. Best, Dan
You mentioned Chiang Mai was getting overrun with expats. Yup – as is the rest of Thailand. Also, Thailand’s cost of living has been going up steadily, the government’s become rather hostile to those intending to make Thailand a more permanent home, and, last but not least, the population centers in every region seem to cater primarily to sex tourists. I’m certain I’m not the only one who’s removed Thailand from the “desirable” lists. I AM worried that Philippines may be heading that way as well. They’re now getting the majority of the clowns booted out of Thailand during the ongoing crackdowns. NOT promising for Philippines!
Now I know why they don’t like you, you started it by saying a lot of toxic things (not so nice) about the Ms Universe from the PHILIPPINES, no wonder why they hated you so much, since you started the fire on the net by igniting it and I don’t blame them…
I’ve lived in Chiang Mai and Palawan the Philippines. I still prefer CM. Far,far better food, and less violence. Right now the air pollution is unbearable , but generally I’ll take Chiang Mai. I agree that with the new king expats are less welcome in Thailand. Might have to take my money and myself to Cambodia, lovely country.
@Vagabond Awake Yesterday the CM AQI was 186. And the AQI is deteriorating well beyond the slash and burn season.
Thailand has many foreigners for sure Mr. C. Chiang Mai seems less affected by sex tourism than other parts of Thailand. Best, Dan
I’ll probably retire to Duma because of the relative lack of a language barrier and the friendliness of Filipinas to older foreigners. But Nha Trang sounds like a foodie destination!
@Zenbeach Traveler This is what happens when it gets publicized by various websites like this one….
@Zenbeach Traveler > Now I know why they don’t like you, you started it by saying a lot of toxic things (not so nice) about the Ms Universe from the PHILIPPINES, no wonder why they hated you so much, since you started the fire on the net by igniting it and I don’t blame them…
@Zenbeach Traveler couldn’t disagree more. When Forbes magazine did an article on Dumaguete as a replacement for retirement-the place took off.
The streets are well laid out and there’s enough shops. You have Siquijor, Apo Island and Oslob nearby as well as nice beaches in dauin.Chiang Mai or Khao San road with all the millenial twat packers sounds like your cup of tea.
Nha Trang is Russian expat central-there are some shops with Russian writing on the front.
Except for vin pearl island-it’s boring.
Absolutely Dan. If I had a lovely young woman like yours the decision might go otherwise. I’ve heard Filipino food can’t hold a candle to the rest of the region, but I’m in a Boston boy in Green Bay Wisconsin so I’ll by fine with being able to travel a shorter distance for good eats.
Be well!
Very disappointed with your choices.
All are aware of places like Bangkok, Changmai, KL, Bali,Phuket.
We want the hidden gems:)
Great idea. I would put that on a list of things to do. A “Hidden Gems” video. Hidden gems implies to me that very few people are there. Not many retirees would want to live somewhere that doesn’t have a hospital. Give me an example of what you think is a hidden gem anywhere in the world and I will respond. A hidden gem for me may not be your thing. Also, I ranked according to 4 different criteria. Did you you watch all the way to the end of the video? My rural self reliance list has a few hidden gems. Best, Dan
I enjoy your videos very much. I live in Bangkok Thailand and I agree with your carefully selected choices
Thanks 1one. ๐ Bangkok is a blast. Love the food and the river life there. And the laissez fair attitude. I spend 2-3 weeks there every other year doing medical and dental checkups. Best, Dan
Great lists. I’ve been to most places mentioned so I can relate as to why these places are good. Thanks Dan.
We should chat some time Metal. Sounds like you have lived an interesting life. Best, Dan

Dan . I like your informative videos and don’t want to rain on your parade but most of these countries don’t make it easy for foreigners to retire in them . They’re easy to visit with perhaps a month extendable visa or visa run but to get retirement visas the bar is now quite high . Quite a good income is required and many tens of thousands of dollars deposited in a local bank .
Malaysia , Thailand . In Bali to retire there you must get a one year lease dwelling of over $500pm and also employ a house person . Plus income requirements . Not very convenient if you feel like a few weeks away somewhere else . VN doesn’t have a retirement visa of course . Don’t know about the Phills . Just keeping you honest !
Cheers … thanks for your info and thoughts . Over 7000 islands to explore sounds a bit exhausting . Im of the idea ( Thailand ) these days that one beach place is like the next . All have bars , massage , lovely beaches , restaurants . Personally I like Samui but mainly because it feels like a home away from home after many visits . @nfntFX45
Go to Nicaragua, Colombia or Ecuador, retirement visas for people with income of less than $900 in each one. Plus the language is actually learnable!
Howdy !!! FYI, I’m an American Retiree from VEGA$ and will be retiring in the PHILIPPINES by the end of this year. Most of my friends already moved and/or about to retire to enjoy a lifetime adventure by exploring 7,641 Tropical Paradise Islands, where the locals are very welcoming to foreigners, almost everyone speaks fluent English (easy to communicate), very friendly, hospitable and treat you as a member of the family… Please check PRA (Philippine Retirement Authority) web site for more info >>> https://pra.gov.ph/
True. Yet, literally thousands of Americans, Europeans, etc. live in all of these places. Just click the “More Information” link in the notes below this video to get links to all of the retire cheap reports for these place. Thanks for sharing. Dan
Nice video!
What is the most desirable place to live for an older American guy that wants to find a younger girlfriend for a long term relationship? (And, I am not talking about party-girls.)
@Geraldine Heimy yeah, but that is a risk I am willing to live with. I enjoy the challenge of finding a new girlfriend. hehe
Wow. Just be careful if youโre old and look for younger girlfriend, they might cheat on you someday and look for younger man.
@dean and deanbear are you sure? hehe
midwest , USA.
We are on the same page. I don’t understand why so many people are attracted to professionals. I am going to assume you mean a woman that is the age of consent. I would say they are in every town in every part of SE Asia. You will need to overcome cultural differences so my only advice is to stay with women that speak English so you can work through those differences. Stay tuned. Our video tonight will be about how we met.
Great list and always fun to debate! I was surprised that Da Nang, Vietnam wasn’t on the list of best places to retire but then I see you did add it to the list of best adventure locations.
There was small expat suburb south of Da Nang tat I really liked. But I liked Hoi An a little better so it got pushed off the list. Check it out. It is the 4th video on this page. Do you know it? https://vagabondbuddha.com/retire-in-da-nang-vietnam/
Dumageutte? An overcrowded poop hole. You can’t even park a scooter on the streets most of the time.
@dean and deanbear Woah, another DIMWIT JEALOUS TROLL/HATER/RACIST/BASHER/BULLY from TIMBUKTU!!!
@Maritess Ignacio shut up Maritess.
AFAIK, also the PHILIPPINES is home of 200 plus popular YouTube Travel Vloggers as their Home Base w/ their growing subbies w/ 7,641 Tropical Paradise Islands of adventure to explore !!! LMAO
FYI, PHILIPPINES has 7,641 Tropical Island Paradise and more than 500 BEACHES (each island has at least 2 or more beach comes with white, brown, gray, pink & black sand close to the Volcano) on clear, aqua, emerald, blue, turquoise waters and a couple hundred more undiscovered unspoiled beaches and lots of SANDBARS…

Ive been to 8 of the 10 on your list, i was kinda shocked by chang mai, i lived there for 3 months, and found it boring, and rat infested. But haa we all have places we love. Great vid by the way
Now I know why they don’t like you, you started it by saying a lot of toxic things (not so nice) about the Ms Universe from the PHILIPPINES, no wonder why they hated you so much, since you started the fire on the net by igniting it and I don’t blame them…
@Vagabond Awake im not done traveling yet, but i do love indonesia, and the pi. I kinda fellout of love with thailand, theres so much non sence there, but i do love southern phukette. You done a good job, i was only giving my openion on chiang mai. And i did spens a weekend up in pie, i had a blast up in that ol hippy town.
Thanks for the feedback Mark. What would be your top 10 in SE Asia. Best, Dan
I prefer Hoi An over Nha Trang. I also prefer El Nido in the Philippines over Dumaguete.
joe bruhin I was there 5 years ago beautiful.
When is the last time you have been to El Nido? Very polluted and populated now…..15-20 years ago it was most beautiful but now it is just too damn commercial.
They are both amazing. You sound like you are one traveling man. Thanks for your comment Vegas. Best, Dan
While many US old expats choose Dumaguete to retire, it’s quite ironic that there are more American expats permanent residents in Cebu than anywhere else in the Philippines. In fact, Cebu is home to majority of expats living in the Philippines.
Zenbeach Traveler You are so right Dumaguete used to be laid back, but because of the progress it spoils what it’s used to be, it loses its essence. But we can’t stop the progress, it’s good for their economy. It also create jobs for jobless residents who, mostly, can work only as laborers in many construction projects with small pay or salary, but it’s better than nothing.
Dumaguete is so crowded now, so many people from other regions in PI are now living there, besides the foreigners. So how many times have you visited the city of gentle people?
By the way, do I know you from someplace? hahaha. Originally I’m from Dumaguete, but now, I’m a California residence.
Nice to come across with you Mr. Z. Traveler. ๐ Stay home and be safe!
โ@Vagabond Awake Most of them in Metro Cebu area (including Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City) and resort towns. Maybe because Cebu hosts to many medical facilities as well as huge schools and commercial activities while just few minutes drive to many natural attractions such as waterfalls, beaches, snorkeling and diving and mountains.
Where in Cebu would you say most live Lion? Thanks for commenting. Best, Dan
Hello Dan. By now you know me by “name”. Some videos I fast forward what I think is not important but this particular work of yours kept me watching every second of the 18’33”. You remind me of a colleague of mine (I am a retired College Professor) who spoke with the low, slow tone you talk. It allows us to digest your info in your work…. This one is a Gem…Keep up your work… I hope I meet you in one of my South Asia travels…after the Coronavirus…..
Thanks Flights. I’ll take that to heart. Have a great day. Best, Dan
Hey Dan, great video! This is what I have been looking for when comparing the various SE countries. Could you also include the average (low, medium, high) prices for each place that you recommend, broken into: 1) retirement / long term residence vs 2) short term vacation?
Thanks for the great ideas Gianni . Best, Dan
I enjoyed the video. I live on Camiguin and I really like the slow pace of life here but will use your list to plan for month long vacations. Living on Camiguin allows me to travel easily and still keep my small town home here.
You have figured out life Phil. Thanks for sharing. I have the same concept. Live cheap 9 month of the year and spend a little more traveling the other 3. Best, Dan

Let us know if you have any questions.
Failure to take into account pollution and high costs of beer and wine, chocolate etc. Cheaper in Eastern Europe for higher living standards.
I also love Eastern Europe in the spring and fall. But winter can be awful. But it is a great aplace if the cold ddoesn’t get you down.
Eastern Europe is not in SE Asia. Do you have a similar video on Eastern Europe? I would like to see that to.
yes you do not need a fridge either
Why not African countries? I haven’t seen one video about retiring in Africa. Kenya for example is popular expat place for Europeans but for Americans it’s not on the map.
@Vagabond Awake Thanks
โ@King African What would I suggest? Madagascar Nosy Be, Toliara, Toamasina. Mombasa Kenya, Dar ar Salam Tanzania, Kigali Rwanda, Entebbe Uganda and maybe Lusaka Zambia. Cheaper than the Philippines and in case of Madagascar just as beautiful. The girls there are South East Asian/Black very nice sexy petite mix. Yes Madagascar was populated by migrants from Borneo so if you are into Filipinas you may like it there. https://youtu.be/qzYsehGeztE?t=44
Hi Nandorman, I have only been to S. Africa, Egypt, and Morocco. I would consider retiring in the blue city in Morocco. That was pretty cool. https://vagabondbuddha.com/blue-city-chefchaouen-things-to-do/
What would u suggest
God one
Pattaya, Thailand, Doi Saket, Thailand, Bacoled Philippines, Aurora Philippines, Kanchanaburi, Thailand,
Thanks for sharing your favorites Restless. Dan
You fail to mention that retirement visas in Thailand are extremely expensive and require mountains of red tape. The government wants rich expats and nobody else. Health insurance is compulsory and astronomical if you are over 65.
@Vagabond Awake in reality nothing much hรคs changed
Many are seeing Thailand more as a place to visit from a base in Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, or Philippines. It is a great place but not as a base so much anymore. But it is not as bad as many expats are saying these days. Many expats are complaining to slow down new expats from coming to Thailand. So it is worth a look when you are in SE Asia.
Personally, I prefer other places in SE Asia: https://vagabondbuddha.com/top-10-places-to-retire-in-se-asia/
@Gordon Pattison Shhh…let them continue to think it’s all red tape.
Thailand is not such a good place for foreigners at the moment as the Thais see that the CCPVirus has come into the country with them.
@Robert Ward that wรคs for tourists check your facts.
Beautiful!
Thanks Relu. Planet beautiful. Happy to be here. Best, Dan
Personally, I would pick Kuala Lumpur or Penang because of the health care, English, and modern lifestyle. Then travel by Air Asia (which is very affordable) to the other great locations.
Well said. I love Malaysia. That is where I met Qiang Hui. Best, Dan

King African Yes, you’re right.
@Marijo Livitzky afternoon ๐ so, I take it the only VETERANS CLINIC, IS N MANILA
They also have a new modern hospital called Ace Dumaguete Doctor’s hospital. Now the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital has been upgraded. The good thing is I haven’t heard of Covid patients now a days except one patient (not from Dgte) have died from the virus in one of the hospitals there, He got infected in metro Manila, at Greenhills where the rich Chinese’ people love to hang around and shop.
That’s what I’m looking for..thinking bout MANILA

My and I we decided to retire in the Philippines
Very nice. Where?
If we would have a top ten of your presentations, I would rate this one #1 !!! You provided information, you were brief thus making it interesting, your over-all plus three other options made it comprehensive. Congratulations!
I am hoping to be in Nha Trang on the 26th if things go well with the virus isuues. Fortunately Vietnam is number one in LEAST amount of virus infections in SE Asia!
Thanks Dean. Are they testing in Vietnam? Not much testing herein Philippines. Best, Dan

I’m so glad you mentioned Kampot Cambodia because that’s where I bought a property for my retirement. it is a beautiful place surrounding by mountains and on the hillside are full of greens
It is a lovely laid back place. Very relaxing pace. We really enjoyed it Molly. Congrats on your property. Best, Dan
Hello my friend just found you today. I just returned from the Philippines with my Filipino wife. I’d love to retire there but haven’t found the right place. I like it quiet and peaceful (most cities in Ph are dirty and polluted with cheap diesel fuel fumes) I don’t mind at all being in the tricycles and jeepneys i’m not what you would call soft but a lot of places are not healthy at all. So i’m seeking a quiet place…it is also a bit risky living very rural where i prefer if you know what i mean. Wish my wife had family where we could settle with them but that is not the case. Thailand would be more to my liking but for it’s too late too crowded and i would have loved Bali 15 years ago but now it’s too late again. Although polluted and dirty I do love the Philippines and feel happy there, i live in the Ozarks and it is very peaceful and clean, it’s very good for me (i’m a potter). I have a few places in mind to check out on my next trip to Ph..i’m almost afraid to say where (Tablas would be one)….I get the cultural interest but now in my winter season of life i’m more of a indweller….my wife likes it here in the Ozarks and prefers the US over her home country although she is ok with either country…..also i felt at least 5 years younger in the Philippines which put me in the autumn season of my life. Thanks for you video all the best to you in Dumaguete…take very good care/
Great share Joe. I know what you mean about feeling younger in the Philippines. If I were you, I would just slow travel around the Philippines until you find the perfect spot. I interviewed Calvin a few days ago and he was able to find his perfect spot. It is easy and cheap to travel around the Philippines. So just find your own little secret paradise. They are everywhere here. Best, Dan
French Caledonie also might be good. No Visa needed for europeans and a well known language (french!) with european infrastructure standarts. Pourquoi pas?
@Vagabond Awake I did think a moment. EU europeans could use their european state health insurance what is excellent in my case. Monthly 150 Euros about with unlimited healthcare – and they cannot fire you. Forbidden by law because we did pay years as our boss 50/50% in that insurance. In my case as for all EU europeans (and limited also for US americans in very special professions) no problems to work and easily I could make with a few hours weekly 1 – 2 000 Euros per month. No restrictions to buy property. No visa costs for EU citizins; a pretty easy way for US citizin (as in the EU). A very stable democracy. The referendum wont change nothing: the majority will vote for remain (France). French is an easy language to learn if you want, believe me. The education system is all in french and has french standarts (better than in the Philippines the average system might be – intresting for couples with kids). The health system has 100% european standarts. The negative to me: you are really ! on the other end of the world. The Philippines is closer to Thailand, Japan, Corea but… Caledonie is closer to Australia (Melbourne) if such closeness is wanted. It would not be the alternative for many people but in some cases (people with dual american – EU – citizinship and some language skills this might be at least a 3-6 month alternative per year to the Phils in case the budget shall be renewed easier than in the Phils. I also did recognize that in the Phils language teachers in german and sometimes french are really on high demand and do find easily jobs for 1000 Euros or more monthly – also intresting to know. In general an issue as that is easier for mixed couples (filipina / US / EU) than for just singles I think (to be solved). My wife is learning beeing a nurse. With than 5 languages she will be on high demand everywhere I guess…all these german, american, french and australian expats who get ill, might apreciate it to be treated in their native language… so: good qualification, some positiv thinking and flexibility are I think some basic help in all. Just going without any regular income or really lots of savings is allways a bad ida no matter where. Corona will die. We will have a wonderful perspective – I cannot wait to retire in some years. To you: all best and take care. P.S. I liked Cebu the best so far but I never was in Dem. Will go there!
@Vagabond Awake they will have an other referendum about independence but by 99% stay french. The money makes the world go round in the end. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Caledonia
@Vagabond Awake I am half german , half french married with a filipina. I like Asia so I do search alternatives, compromising. In Caledonie I could work as I want (as laywer), get a good salery and would not need any visa. I would use my native language also. For you americans that might be not perfect, but Caledonie is a first world place between Australia and more or less South East Asia. I can imagine to life at several places in a few years from now – also to earn money 6 months and 6 months to live from that…
Would say: 1500 Euros / month would be ok, if you are modest also may be 1200. less I would not recomment – from 2000 Euros it might be really really nice. . Not as cheap as the Philippines but in some things much cheaper… education + healthcare are cheaper!
Thanks for the tip MC. Do you live there? What sort of budget do you need? Best, Dan
Have you been to Dumaguete? You havenโt learned how to pronounce it
@Life Abroad WRONG ! Its bohol
Also he doesnt know that Dumaguette is the WORST place in the philippines, and the WORST place to get advice is at macdonalds dumaguette! its full of uneducated Idiots!
@Vagabond Awake Boho not Bohol as everyone else says it, but its okay ๐
Thats me at 7:18. Thanks for commenting RR. I am famous for my questionable linguistics. Dan https://youtu.be/7MsONcx8zps?t=441
Thanks for all the replies . We are looking into Cebu area . One Cheaper Apartments ECT there just have to know where the Military Hospitals are in Cebu area . I am thinking Military Hospital will not be in Down town area is my guess. Plus just cause You Tube says they are there dont mean they are and if open . From what i see here Cebu is better than Manila area
You may want to join the Facebook Expat page for Cebu. Maybe someone there would know? Thanks for commenting again Joe. ๐

Yessss nha trang baby … I use to live there and enjoy daily hardcore relaxing with super delicious cheap food like jelly fish noodles or the awesome chicken rice dish and very nice seafood. Also ride motorbike early in the morning to the fish markets near to nha trang … I will definitely buy a house there and move forever in a couple years.nha trang is just awesome
Yes! Plus there is an amazing assortment o vegetarian food there and I love how the older generation of Vietnamese meditate at the waters edge at sunrise. They are an inspiring people.
he generally avoids the visa problems! ๐คทโโ๏ธ visa costs per year are higher than my car costs in Europe, you have minimum investments to stay permanently…everything else is just visa snatching and country hopping…check the visa laws!
So still stay home SR?
you actually have to proof minimum income …Phillies 800,-/ month, Thailand much more! they kicked out thousnads of expats there! this is rather a travel video but not useful for retirement when you want to stay legally on the long run! …and if you don.t have a legal perm. residency no country sends your retirement money … so it.s not that easy..and not explained at all, and be aware of tax laws too! it.s not funny to pay 30% taxes suddenly instead for almost zero where you come from! I check that out for two years now! and be aware that most Asian countries prohibit you to buy land as a foreigner…no cheap health insurance, no social network…good luck and have gun, but this is just a vacation movie!
So stay home SR?
Thanks a lot for this overview. Great VDO! I had the feeling that Langkawi was missing on at least one of your lists. Have you been there?
Great suggestion! We spent new years there in 2017 there. Great jungle tour and sky tram. ๐
Philippines is the best in the world!!
Hard to argue with that if you like beautiful nature and people.
Great video, Dan ๐
Thanks, back at you Gwai. ๐ Dan
Nice video. After 120+ countries since 1985 , I would pick Penang. Great food, infrastructure, health care, and excellent value. Don’t buy, just rent.
And so cheap to rent there!
Great video Dan!!!
Thanks Danny! Best, Dan

Not accurate๐คชhahaha thatโs why you donโt have that much subscribers lol๐ฅ
Thanks for commenting Jimmel. How would personal preference be “accurate” in a world of 7 billion people that can’t agree on anything? These are just my favorites after traveling the world for 13 years, 65 countries. Best, Dan
