How about Inopacan, Philippines?? Have you been there??
I haven’t been yet. What have you heard Jin?
Thankful for the info provided.
Happy to help. It is a labor of love Gman.
So interesting how your walk-about in Cagayan de Oro looked EXACTLY like Davao. No difference at all. Sidewalks (if there are any) with uneven surfaces, cracks, missing chunks of concrete and actual holes you can break an ankle in (if youโre not looking down as you walk) are the same story as every city Iโve walked through in the Philippines, Mexico and Nicaragua. All horrible and dangerous, but the people, culture, natural beauty not to mention the food are all wonderful everywhere Iโve traveled throughout SE Asia, Mexico and Central America. And all of that MORE than makes up for any inconveniences along the way. Thanks for this video post!
Lol Cagayan de Oro has a lower crime rate than most Latin American cities savvy. You’ll barely hear horrific crimes happening in my city, even shoot outs are a rarity. South America is what happpens when you allow the cartel to rule the streets and have the police pockets filled with cartel money.
I agree. The people are lovely and accommodating. Davao is on the same island as CDO? Maybe that is why it is so similar.
My My My !!!
Master G!
Love your videos man. I know you focus mostly on the cost of retirement in different countries but would love to know your thoughts on most “pro-western” country. IN other words, which country in Asia feels most welcoming for western retirees???
@Vagabond Awake Fair enough. That’s your experience. However, not everyone will be able to detect the kind of subtle racism seen in SE Asia because Asians express racism different than westerners. And you are not likely to detect racism in SE Asia if you are not living in a set place for a while. It too me a while to see the racism. Did you live continuously in Thailand for many years? I did. Thais are quite racist. You are a tourist who spends at most 1-2 months in a given city. That’s not long enough to see what’s really going on.
@Vagabond Awake I was based out of Thailand from 2005-2009 and found it very welcoming and friendly to westerners. Thinking about basing myself out of Myanmar in the near future.
I have not found what John is saying to be true. In Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, India, Philippines, and Indonesia, I have found that they are even nicer to me as a guest in their country than they are to each other. There might be some demeanor in John’s disposition that tends to make people less welcoming to him. I don’t know what he is talking about. No offense John. Maybe try smiling more?
Philippines
None. Asia is very “nationalistic.” You will always be viewed as an outsider. At best you can try Singapore but who wants to be in a ruthless city-state like that?
It’s not lower prices. You are lowering your living standards. You are living like a local which is like a pauper in the USA.
John Doe thatโs weird because it feels like most people are slaving away here in the states and when you get to the Philippines itโs like living like a king. And yes at $1000 a month! Either youโre doing it wrong or youโre getting ripped off.
I dont like this john doe guy.
@Vagabond Awake Where am I? SE Asia. This is why I know the reality. $600 for lodging will not get you $1000 living costs. Did you factor in medical insurance, visa costs, food, incidentals, travel and entertainment, etc.? Again, you are lowering your standards which can be done by anyone anywhere. I rent out my 2 bedroom apartments in the USA for $500/month. If I scaled down like you I could also live in the USA for $1000/month.
Your character makes you mediocre.
The condo we stayed in CDO was 600 month (including utilities) and it is newer and nicer than the ones I rent out in the USA for $1400 per month (not including utilities). The food is less than half price here even in the tourist restaurants. I am here. Where are you? Maybe I know a think or two. Thanks for commenting though.

Same reply? Thanks for commenting John.
I know CDO better than most, and you summed it up pretty well Dan. It’s quite easy to walk around the main parts of the city. The food options are improving, but it’s a slow process. Fruit and Veg. is pretty cheap.
@Vagabond AwakeTrue. I hope you got try Pilian Restaurant.? The only Vegetarian restaurant in the downtown area. Great food and cheap too.
Yes. The main market has really cheap fruits and vegetables, rice, and even meats if that is your thing. ๐
But how do you handle medical insurance if you are constantly traveling?
Just google medical insurance for long term travelers. I don’t buy it though. I just pay for care as I go. The monthly premiums in the USA are more than a week in the hospital in many places in the world. So I just pay as I go and spend less than 1000 per year all in. Even if I got something like cancer .. some of the top rated cancer hospitals in the world are in places that costs less than just the premiums in the USA. Don’t believe the hype … or just buy insurance .. whatever suits you best. I pay as I go. Plus, once you are 65, you have medicare in the USA and you can decide to fly back. I am in the Philippines at a resort today run by an American that is 82. He flys back whenever he needs back surgery.
Eating healthy like Dan, and use some common sense.
From your video it looks like traffic is better there, and air quality must be as well, compared to Cebu City. No beach close is a negative, but the river looked clean also. I saw a kid riding a bicycle, which is good for me, because no license, registration or insurance requirements.
I am with you on both counts. I prefer it over Cebu. And biking is good for your health.

Please let us know if you have any questions. ๐
Food in Philippines is cheap compare in America. Even the cinema is really cheap, like 3 to $5 for a regular movie vs ka $11-15
@Vagabond Awake that’s what I like in the Philippines, food is really cheap.
It feels good having fun without burning through so much cash.
The minimum daily salary for people in Cagayan de Oro is around 400 pesos I think. That’s just less than $10. And there are lot more who doesn’t earn that much. There will be few locals who earn more that $10 but still not that much. Maybe a regular office worker might earn 15 to 25k pesos per month. That’s around $500. That’s why your American dollar goes a long way living in the Philippines. But if you choose to stay on those really high end resorts then expect to pay $$
@Vagabond Awake you’re welcome. Enjoy staying in Cagayan de Oro. Just be mindful when crossing the streets, most Jeepney drivers really don’t follow the laws and pedestrian safety. That’s what I don’t be like in Philippines lack of discipline drivers
Thanks for sharing Cartman. ๐
Thanks for promoting CDO, Philippines..๐๐๐
You are welcome. Thank you for commenting.
I live in California but im renting a 3bedroom house in cagayan de oro and a nice location just going up a small hill so i get to feel a nice breeze. My rent is 8400 pesos and water and electricity combine is like 1200 pesos..total is $189 american dollars..My girlfriend lives in my house im renting..she told me she could find cheaper maybe 6500 pesos but our place looks nice plus its safe n gated..If you groceries shop its cheap..$80 bucks can feed 3 or 2 people for 1 month..
Can I interview you for the channel Family Fun? Video or audio in skype or whatever. Many people benefit from that sort of information. Plus you would be a lifesaver for me since I can’t really travel right now so hard to make my normal content. Best, Dan

Have you seen any raw water buffalo milk for sale in the traditional market?
Vagabond Awake I grew up on raw fresh water buffalo milk sixty years ago when my mom could not breast feed me. I like the taste.
Hi Mark,
I haven’t looked. I have never even heard that before … Is that an allergy thing?
Best,
Dan
Do you know if there is a visa for people who are married to a Filipina I heard there is one called the 13 a visa
Yes. A bunch of people get marriage Visas. Just go to the expat FB page for CDO and ask. People love to help each other over here. Thanks for commenting Dan
